2014, Gifts, giveaway

Interview and Giveaway!

Update: This giveaway is now closed. “resident robin” is our winner. Congratulations! Barbara will be contacting the winner soon.

As part of Gift-Along 2014, I am very excited to interview my first featured designer Barbara aka browneyedbabs on Ravelry.

  • What inspired you to become a designer?
I had learned to knit as a child but didn’t start knitting properly till I was in my mid twenties and people I loved started having babies. I had hardly any spare money so I would make up my own patterns for things to try and recreate products I loved but couldn’t afford – not always successfully! Eventually, I got good enough that I decided to start writing down my patterns and it all went from there.

  • What aspect/phase of knit design do you enjoy the most? And which one do you enjoy the least?
My favourite thing is seeing other people enjoying my patterns, I still get a little thrill when I see someone add photos of their finished toys to Ravelry. The worst bit for me is laying out the pattern and taking the photos. It takes a surprisingly long time to make a pattern fit neatly onto the pages and look pretty.

  • Do you find time to knit from other designers’ patterns? Who are your favorite designers?
I don’t get a lot of time to knit other people’s patterns, that’s one of the best things about the giftalong. Like last year, I’m taking a couple of months off from designing to enjoy knitting without having to think. I’ve just cast on the Keikomi cowl with some special yarn and I’m really enjoying it. I also really love patterns by Hilary Smith Callis I made myself one of her Starshower cowls recently as a reward for getting some patterns designed by the magazine deadlines.

  • Which patterns in your store can be made as quick holiday gifts?
My quickest toy is Katie Kitty Puppet, it’s a simple knit and if you’re really in a hurry you can skip the finishing and gift it with glue on googly eyes and felt shapes for a child to decorate it with. Dreamy Owl is another quick pattern and is great for babies.

  • What gifts are you making/knitting for this holiday season?
This year I’m making cowls, slippers and hats. Some for me and some for friends and family. I’ve got to keep them secret though so that there is a surprise on Christmas morning!

Thank you so much Barbara for taking time to answer these questions. I hope you had as much fun with this interview as I did.

To celebrate the Gift-A-Long, Barbara would like to offer you the opportunity to win one of her patterns. To enter, have a look through Barbara’s patterns and leave a comment about your favorite design of hers. Giveaway ends midnight IST Saturday, November 22. A random winner will be chosen from the comments.

It is so hard to choose one from her lovely collection. Look how cute Duncan the Donkey is.

Name it and Win it: Pattern Giveaway

I am back with another giveaway. I have designed a crescent shaped lace shawl for which I don’t have a name. The shawl is knit bottom up and has pretty bell shaped flowers on the edge. 1. Leave a comment on this post with your suggestions. You can even tweet, if you want. I am affiknity on Twitter, so make sure you grab my attention if you decide to tweet your suggestions.
2. No limit on the number of names you can suggest
3. If I decide to use the name you suggested, you will win a copy of the pattern, sent to you as Ravelry gift or PDF e-mailed to you.
4. Contest ends on August 30 2013.
5. Winner will be announced once the pattern goes live.
6. As a thank you to the other participants, I will draw a name randomly who will win a copy of this pattern.

2013, giveaway, Knitting for Boys, Vest

Name it and Win it: Pattern Giveaway

I am almost done with this cable vest for boys and girls and I am all set to release it. Except I don’t have a name for it yet. Yes, this is the vest I have an urge to name ‘Thirteenth Time Lucky’ because it took me 12 attempts to get this right. Or should I name it ‘Phew!’?

Humor apart, no matter where I look for inspiration, I seem to draw a blank, so I am turning to my friends and blog readers to help me out. I love word plays, so the name could be a play on the cable (staghorn) or the technique (cable) or anything that you think which suits the vest. Here is one of the photos from the shoot. Not the best, but I don’t want to reveal the best until the release.

Just leave a comment with your suggestion(s). Two winners will receive a copy of this pattern, sent to them on Ravelry or emailed to them. The first winner will be the one who suggested the winning name and the second winner will be randomly picked, so even if your suggested name does not get picked, you still stand a chance to win.

Here are the rules:

1. Leave a comment on this post with your suggestions.
2. No limit on the number of names you can suggest
3. If I decide to use the name you suggested, you will win a copy of the pattern, sent to you as Ravelry gift or PDF e-mailed to you.
4. Contest ends on Jan 15 2013.
5. Winner will be announced once the pattern goes live.
6. As a thank you to the other participants, I will draw a name randomly who will win a copy of this pattern.

Put on your thinking cap and comment away.

Giveaway Winners

I hosted a giveaway on my blog for a copy of my latest design which is now named as Hira.  I got some lovely suggestions, but I got some feedback from friends and folks that the original name I have chosen (Hira) is quite good too. I found it to be a bit boring, probably because it is such a commonly used word in India. After some contemplation, I decided to stick with it. That could be a let down for all you guys, so I decided to choose two winners randomly (instead of one, as I had initially planned).

So, here are the winners:

1. purplesweetpea

2. AmyS
Congratulations both of you. I will be contacting you both ever email.

Thanks for participating everybody.

I have a new design for a girl’s spring cardigan which is in test knitting phase right now. As always, I had very little trouble in deciding on the yarn and the stitch pattern, but I am unable to come up with a good name. I turn to you all for help again to find a name for this design.

This cardigan is intended to be worn open. The collar has quilted lattice stitch pattern which can be worked plain or using beads. See the pictures for inspiration and let me know your suggestions. There will be two winners this time. Read on for details.

Giveaway Winner

I hosted a giveaway on my blog for a copy of my latest design which is now named as Aviva. I turned to you all creative people for help in naming the pattern. There were many lovely suggestions and I spent a ton of time going through them, googling for their meanings, searching Rav if any pattern has already used that name and finally I decided on Aviva. Even though nobody suggested this particular name, what led me to it is Danielle’s suggestion ‘Primavera’. When I was googling this word, one of the websites listed ‘Aviva’ as an alternative word and that caught my eye.

So, here are the winners:

1. Danielle for suggestion ‘Primavera’ which led to me to ‘Aviva’

2. Rosebob: randomly chosen winner
Congratulations both of you. I will contact you both soon.

Thanks for participating everybody.
